Extra Space Developments believe this structure is one of the most interesting and significant in Wakefield. Dating back to 1894 this building was designed by architect Frank Matcham and was built for a price of £13,000. The combination of sensitive refurbishment within the existing grade II listed building and a high-quality contemporary extension has allowed the theatre to become a ‘beacon’ of cultural activity in Wakefield.
This building is one of three co-equal Anglican cathedrals for the Diocese of Leeds and a seat of the Bishop of Leeds. The spire of Wakefield Cathedral at a height of approximately 247 feet, is the tallest church in Yorkshire and still dominates the city skyline! The cathedral was designated a Grade I listed building on 14 July 1953.
Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, this interesting building is composed of a grouping of trapezoidal blocks and also contains learning studios, an auditorium, an archive, and a café and shop. The gallery site has been developed at a cost of £35 million as part of the £100 million regeneration of Waterfront Wakefield.
The building's brutalist design is not universally popular with local people but Extra Space definitely appreciate the styling.

The building was constructed in an attempt to rival Leeds and Bradford as the principle government centre of West Yorkshire! It is built out of Spinkwell Stone, whilst the lack of detailing, unusual for a Gothic Revival building of the ere.
